A Lasting Legacy
One person who understood a lasting legacy was Benjamin Franklin, who died in 1790.  In his will, Franklin left 1,000 pounds sterling ($4,000) to Philadelphia and Boston, with instruction that the funds build over the long term and generate earnings for his lifetime.

By 1990, 200 years after Franklin's death, his bequests had grown into multi-million dollar endowments that continue to fund scholarships, fire departments, libraries, and symphonics.  Franklin demonstrated that structured, or planned, gifts can provide a permanent link between a person and the charities he loves.
